The glossy version of adventure is everywhere. We are more interested in the true version — the trips where it rained for three days, where the summit was socked in, where a beginner surprised herself, where a partnership formed that will last for years. These are first-person stories from women in our community, shared in their own words, because the honest account is the one that actually helps the next woman lace up.
My First Solo Overnight
"I had backpacked plenty with friends, but going alone felt like a different species of brave. I picked a familiar trail, told my sister my exact plan, and set off. The fear lasted about an hour — until I realized I knew how to do every single thing the trip required. I made camp, cooked dinner as the valley went gold, and slept better than I had in months. I woke up a more confident version of myself. If you are on the fence about your first solo, start small and start known. You are more capable than the fear suggests."
Learning to Lead Climb at Forty
"Everyone told me climbing was a young person's sport. They were wrong. I started top-roping in a gym, found a patient mentor through this community, and two seasons later I led my first outdoor pitch. My hands were shaking and I have never felt more alive. Age was never the barrier; the story I told myself about age was. The crag does not check your ID."
The Trip That Didn't Go to Plan
"We turned around four hundred feet below the summit. The weather was building, our turnaround time had passed, and the right call was the disappointing one. I used to think a trip only counted if you topped out. Now I know the best decision I made all year was walking away from a summit so I could come back another day. Good judgment is the real summit."
Found My People at a Trailhead
"I moved to a new city knowing no one and missing the mountains. I joined a local chapter through Babes Network for a beginner-friendly day hike, mostly terrified. By the end of the day I had three new hiking partners and a standing invitation for the next weekend. A year later, those strangers are some of my closest friends. Community is the gear nobody tells you to pack."
